University life is a landscape of immense opportunity, but it also exposes youths to profound academic stress, peer pressure, and hidden vulnerabilities. On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Rural Women’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ) stepped onto the campus of The University of Bamenda at the Higher Technical Teacher Training College (HTTTC), Bambili, to confront a growing shadow darkening our academic institutions. Driven by its core mission to advocate for gender equality and protect human rights, RWASJ spearheaded an impactful awareness campaign titled: “Organized Crime: Drug Abuse as a Driver of GBV and Organ Trafficking Among University Youths.”
The campus seminar, structured precisely around the HTTTC Student Protection timeline, launched at 8:00 AM with a clear goal: equipping students to remain secure academically, socially, physically, and digitally. RWASJ’s vision envisions a society entirely free from discrimination, exploitation, and violence. By linking substance abuse directly to wider criminal networks, the campaign illuminated how local vulnerabilities feed into global human rights violations.

The Dangerous Synergy: Substance Abuse and Gender-Based Violence

During the specialized awareness sessions, the dialogue unmasked drug abuse not merely as an isolated health crisis, but as a critical driver of structural violence. Chemical substances heavily impair judgment, dissolve self-control, and spike aggression. This toxic behavioral shift is directly tied to the rising waves of sexual harassment and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) plaguing student communities.
When young people fall into substance dependency, their altered states of consciousness strip away personal safety and mutual consent. RWASJ’s session on sexual harassment stressed that true safety requires accountability, an absolute understanding of consent, and robust, reliable campus reporting channels.

Under the fraudulent guise of fake scholarships, rapid job offers, or travel opportunities, desperate students are systematically lured into traps. Tragically, these manipulations frequently lead to human trafficking and illicit organ trafficking, a horrific trade where vulnerable youths are deceived or coerced into illegal organ removal for corporate profit.

On Tuesday, 12 May 2026, the Rural Women’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ) took its community-driven crusade directly to the hallways of Akum secondary schools in Northwest Cameroon. Organized as part of RWASJ’s foundational commitment to securing human rights, personal safety, and social equity, this intensive awareness campaign directly addressed the growing interconnected threats facing local youth: drug abuse, drug trafficking, and sexual violence.
Through peer education, interactive forums, and raw public testimonies, the event brought into sharp focus the urgent need to protect the region’s youth, vindicating RWASJ’s ultimate vision of creating a fair world where children, women, and vulnerable populations can live without fear of systemic exploitation and violence.

Empowering Voices from the Classroom Frontlines

The atmosphere across the Akum secondary schools was electric yet intensely focused. Hundreds of enthusiastic students dressed in their green, red, and yellow athletic uniforms gathered in the open-air school courtyards, actively participating in a peer-led masterclass on self-protection and social responsibility.
As captured during the outreach sessions, brave student leaders took up microphones alongside RWASJ facilitators to advocate directly to their peers. Clutching placards with bold declarations like “STOP DRUG ABUSE,” “STOP DRUG TRAFFICKING,” and “YOUTHS DESERVE BETTER,” the students chanted in unison, cementing their commitment to rejecting organized crime.
A particularly profound breakthrough occurred during an open dialogue segment addressing sexual violence. An inquisitive young student posed a heavy question to the panel:
“If you are being raped, but you successfully manage to escape, can you, and should you, still report it to someone?”

The response from the RWASJ lead facilitator was immediate, unequivocal, and fiercely supportive: “Yes! You are a survivor, and you must report it. The only way we can collectively fight the plague of rape and sexual abuse is by breaking the silence. Do not hide behind threats. Report it to protect your future.”

On Monday, May 11, 2026, the quiet community of Akum village in the Northwest Region of Cameroon became a vibrant hub for change. The Rural Woman’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ), in a dynamic collaboration with COMISUD, GRACARO, MOHCAM, and WOPEN, spearheaded a transformative event designed to operationalize peacebuilding from the ground up. This community-led initiative beautifully manifested RWASJ’s core mission and vision: to empower, sustain, and transform rural spaces by fostering justice and closing critical socioeconomic gaps.

From Grassroots to the Top: The Architecture of Sustainable Peace

The day commenced with a powerful engagement and talk session centred on a vital premise: there is no sustainable peace without women. Guided by international frameworks like UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, the discourse shifted away from top-down administrative mandates, focusing instead on a grassroots-to-top approach.

Resource persons and community leaders analyzed how local women are uniquely positioned to mediate conflicts and de-escalate tensions within their neighborhoods. In an environment recovering from civil strife, the participants collectively declared that peace must begin at home. The visual and audio records capture this profound shift; local women dynamically holding banners reading “One Table, Many Voices for Peace” and chanting in unison:
“We don agree for name this savon way they don come learn we today say… na savon wey dey bring peace for quarter!” (We agree to call this soap we learned to make today… the soap that brings peace to the neighbourhood!)

This powerful quote underscores a fundamental truth recognized by RWASJ: lasting peace is not merely the absence of violence, but the presence of community synergy and collective understanding.

Economic Resilience as a Tool for Mediation

Recognizing that financial vulnerability often fuels social unrest, the workshop seamlessly transitioned into a practical economic empowerment session. RWASJ and its partners provided hands-on training to local participants and women leaders on manufacturing liquid soap for both household use and commercial distribution.

The media captures the tangible energy of this vocational exercise. Large buckets filled with pink and white liquid soap mixtures were stirred, measured, and poured by enthusiastic hands. This economic intervention aligns directly with RWASJ’s vision of promoting financial growth and community resilience. By mastering a viable trade, the women of Akum are not just learning a craft; they are establishing financial independence. An empowered woman with a steady income possesses the social capital, stability, and community respect required to act as an effective, authoritative mediator during times of conflict.

On Saturday, 09 May 2026, the Rural Women’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ) took its core mission of grassroots advocacy, inclusion, and compassion directly to the heart of the Northwest Region. Delegates and volunteers organized a deeply moving humanitarian visit to a local care home and orphanage located in Akum Village. Guided by the profound truth that “Little Things Matter,” the outreach spotlighted the most vulnerable segments of society: orphaned children and those living with severe physical disabilities.

For an organization like RWASJ, justice and sustainable development are entirely impossible without equity and deep social inclusion. This initiative directly aligned with RWASJ’s institutional vision of building safe, self-reliant, and protective spaces for individuals pushed to the margins by socio-economic fractures and ongoing regional crises.

On 21 March 2026, Rural Women’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ) Cameroon joined youths in Bamenda to commemorate the International Day of Forests during the launch of the inspiring album named “Forest Mystery” by the Forest Kids led by “JATO SONITA”
The event took place at the Alliance Franço event Hall, Bamenda North West Region, where youths used music, creativity, and advocacy to raise awareness on environmental protection and climate justice.
Miss Mareka Nkeh Mofor Amina, a Nurse & Youths Sexual and Reproductive health focal point for RWASJ, presented on why menstrual hygiene awareness for adolescent girls matters.

RWASJ used this important platform to educate Girls & all the Youths in general on proper menstrual hygiene management, emphasizing dignity, confidence, and good health for girls at all levels including rural and forest communities.
Calling on the boys to support the girls and not to stigmatize or isolate them during their period.When girls have the right knowledge and support, they are better able to stay healthy, attend school, and participate in all activities in their communities even when menstruating.

This activities consisted of open door and round table discussions and presentations by Judicial personnel of the court in North West, Regional delegation of the ministry of Women Empowerment and the Family, the Penitentiary administration and Civil Society organizations represented by RWASJ.The activities focused on The protection of women and girls in the conflict affected zones of Cameroon, Access to Justice for women and girls without documentation in the context of armed conflict, Combating GBV, Femicide and Female Genital Mutilation and the protection of Survivors of GBV. On Tuesday, November 25, 2025—the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women; Rural Women’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ) made a powerful debut on national television.

Broadcasting live from CRTV Mballa 2 in Yaoundé, our Humanitarian Coordinator and Youth Focal Point joined CRTV’s presenters to kick off the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This high-profile engagement brought the global theme UNiTE! End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls; to the forefront of national conversation.

Breaking the Silence on Digital Abuse

During the live segment, our team shared critical insights into the rising threat of digital GBV and presented RWASJ’s milestones in promoting digital safety. The session was more than just a presentation; it was a call to action. We addressed:

  • The Mission of RWASJ: Introducing our work in rural communities to a national audience.
  • Milestones in Safety: Highlighting our progress in protecting women and girls from online harassment and cyber-threats.
  • Community Prevention: Strategies for local leaders to respond to digital violence effectively.

The response was immediate and overwhelming. Following the broadcast, our hotlines received numerous calls from across the country, with individuals and potential partners eager to join our “strong foundation of change”.
