On Tuesday, 12 May 2026, the Rural Women’s Action for Sustainability and Justice (RWASJ) took its community-driven crusade directly to the hallways of Akum secondary schools in Northwest Cameroon. Organized as part of RWASJ’s foundational commitment to securing human rights, personal safety, and social equity, this intensive awareness campaign directly addressed the growing interconnected threats facing local youth: drug abuse, drug trafficking, and sexual violence.
Through peer education, interactive forums, and raw public testimonies, the event brought into sharp focus the urgent need to protect the region’s youth, vindicating RWASJ’s ultimate vision of creating a fair world where children, women, and vulnerable populations can live without fear of systemic exploitation and violence.

Empowering Voices from the Classroom Frontlines

The atmosphere across the Akum secondary schools was electric yet intensely focused. Hundreds of enthusiastic students dressed in their green, red, and yellow athletic uniforms gathered in the open-air school courtyards, actively participating in a peer-led masterclass on self-protection and social responsibility.
As captured during the outreach sessions, brave student leaders took up microphones alongside RWASJ facilitators to advocate directly to their peers. Clutching placards with bold declarations like “STOP DRUG ABUSE,” “STOP DRUG TRAFFICKING,” and “YOUTHS DESERVE BETTER,” the students chanted in unison, cementing their commitment to rejecting organized crime.
A particularly profound breakthrough occurred during an open dialogue segment addressing sexual violence. An inquisitive young student posed a heavy question to the panel:
“If you are being raped, but you successfully manage to escape, can you, and should you, still report it to someone?”

The response from the RWASJ lead facilitator was immediate, unequivocal, and fiercely supportive: “Yes! You are a survivor, and you must report it. The only way we can collectively fight the plague of rape and sexual abuse is by breaking the silence. Do not hide behind threats. Report it to protect your future.”
